HMO’s, or Houses in Multiple Occupation, are the backbone of property investing in the UK.

The basis of all business is “Buy cheap, sell dear”, and that’s what HMO’s are all about – adding value to a normal residential home you have acquired by converting any suitable room to a bedroom, and then letting out those bedrooms on an individual basis.

It was how I first started way back in 1986 when I bought my very first BTL (Buy-to-Let). Back then, though, they were known as Lodging Houses, not HMO’s!

The range of the HMO strategy today is huge, from the ‘starter’ deal of a single residential three bedroom house turned into a five bed by also converting the lounge and living rooms into bedrooms to massive ‘co-living’ conglomerates complete with bars, gyms and recreational spaces.

For many people, myself included, HMO’s are the stepping stones to a fantastic career in property investing.
